Maurice began pickling herring in the 'washhouse' at the back of his garden in Boechout. He soon moved to the Antwerp fish market on Riemstraat.

In 1954, the company relocated to Kloosterstraat. Maurice Mathieu introduced 'chicken curry' and 'mushrooms à la grecque,' pioneering the traditional sandwich spread market. He developed special dressings with the perfect consistency for these salads.

Maurice Mathieu expanded until he owned the entire block from Kloosterstraat to the Scheldt River. Production spanned five floors. In 1967, Maurice passed away, and his children and grandchildren continued to grow the business.

The iconic Maurice Mathieu delivery vans became a familiar sight, ensuring customers were supplied directly every single day. The Maurice Mathieu name gained recognition beyond Antwerp.

As the fish market disappeared and Antwerp South became a trendy residential area, the company adapted by building a completely new production site in Zwijndrecht.

In 2019, the Van Goethem and Mathieu families sold the business to the family-owned Altoni-Kelderman food company from Schoten. The values of both companies are closely aligned. The fourth generation, Maurice Mathieu's great-grandson, remained involved.

We gave Maurice Mathieu a fresh new look with a modern logo. Under the name Maurice, we remain true to our roots while adding a modern twist, continuing the same passion for the finest salad spreads, dressings, and sauces.
